Alicante City Council has been able to confirm the exact location and some accesses of the four bomb shelters from the Civil War through a study done on the ground by means of penetrating radar for subsurface radiography. In particular, there has been the location of existing on the steps of Jorge Juan and which underlie the intersection between Avenues General Marvá and Benito Perez Galdos, under Poeta Quintana and the walk Gadea.

Regarding the latter, the study determined that is located just below the promenade, facing the Consell delegation known as House of Witches. It is, as said Councilman of Statistics and Urban Image, Adrian Santos, which is in better condition on the basis of the study results. Therefore, it will be the first to be accessed by technicians to inspect the inside and determine whether, as claimed by the council, the first to be rehabilitated for public use is. If so, Santos explained that the intention passes into a museum.

But the aim of this project, with the collaboration of the Department of Commerce and the council, is to rehabilitate shelters for several different uses, from shops to art galleries. "The appeal is twofold because they attract a significant flow of people favoring the business environment, it could also host shops or restoration and this, without the shelter losing its identity and uniqueness," said the Councilor for Trade, Belén González. It is in the maintenance of identity in which the mayor and deputy provincial Mari Carmen of Spain intends to influence establishing guidelines to ensure consistent image and so these vestiges of history do not lose its essence.

Nearly a hundred
Although there are almost a hundred of these underground places where alicantinos were sheltered from the aviation bombs, from all those, the one that posses more options to be opened to the public is the Gadea´s . Santos notes that the stairs access is not locate it, probably due to the debris after demolition. Access is therefore complicated. Therefore, it is intended to open a hole in the walk up to the main gallery, for a person to climb down to the inside of underground pipe and check the condition of the concrete slab roof and the exact location of  the access.

Santos explains inconsistencies that have been detected between the planes of the shelters that were developed in the latest & forties, which pushed the council to hire penetrating radar for a study of the ground. The study has been able to realize, for example that, the shelter located at the intersection of Benito Perez Galdos Marvá and is under the driveway and the access stairs are just where the cars made the turn. Hence, for the moment, it has chosen not to open it to the public. It has also been discarded to do the  Poeta Quintana because of its given depth, the ceiling is 3,5 meters, there is a possibility that is flooded, as the mayor explained. Besides the four shelters under study, the municipal intention is conducting extensive existing location in the square Balmis when the expected remodeling of this public space will be undertaken.

Even though there is evidence of numerous shelters, the biggest problem is the location of the accesses, for which the City appealed to citizen participation. The council intends to continue collecting experiences and photographs of Alicante through visits to local care homes as well as the ballot boxes installed in the municipal markets, in the accesses to the City and the County as well as through the web portal, citizen Participation and web INFORMATION, which enable a space for citizens to continue working with their testimonies.
