Fifty firefighters from Madrid, Granada, Almeria, Cartagena and Lorca underpinned yesterday morning a building in the neighborhood of La Viña to be demolished in 15 days. The so-called 'Ground Zero' earthquake became the driving Brigade Emergency Intervention.
Volunteers of the NGO Action Fire involved for several days in the 'Emergency action in affected structures' course at the Catholic University San Antonio UCAM in collaboration with the company's Urbana de Exteriores'. "What we are doing is putting into practice what has been learned in lectures", said Enrique Mora, technical architect and member of Firefighters in Action.
This activity is part, as stated by the president of the organization, César Claros, in the training plan of the NGO. "We are working in a building severely damaged. In fact, they will be demolished in 15 days. It is a building of three floors with twelve flats and a low in the neighborhood of La Viña. It is a real scenario. Especially, Underpinnings is being undertaken."
The NGO was in Lorca after the earthquakes. "About 70 people, among whom there were firefighters, architects and health-stayed in Lorca for days voluntarily helping Lorca." The participation of this human group is very present in international disasters. "We have been in Haiti, Algeria, Chile, Guatemala, Peru ... Our actions are voluntary, regardless of our jobs," he said.
Some neighbors were surprised at seeing in the district staff in Emergency Intervention Brigade who came with several mobile units and dozens of props. "We knew that in that building will no longer anybody lives, but seeing it cordoned and with the firefighters in, we thought the situation had worsened," Muñoz told Antonio Lopez, a resident of la Viña.
